Valley of the Temples of Agrigento

A few steps from the historic center of Agrigento, you can explore one of the most significant testimonies of Greek culture and art: the Valley of the Temples, the ancient Akragas, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This extraordinary archaeological site is one of the largest and best-preserved in the world, offering a fascinating journey into the heart of Magna Graecia. 

Among the main temples, you can admire the Temple of Heracles, built at the end of the 6th century BC, the oldest in the valley, dedicated to the mythological hero Heracles (Hercules). The Temple of Concordia, dating back to the 5th century BC, is one of the best-preserved Doric temples in the world, comparable in grandeur only to the Parthenon in Athens. Its imposing structure and perfectly preserved columns offer a breathtaking spectacle, especially at sunset, when the temple is bathed in warm and evocative colors.The Temple of Juno, situated on a panoramic hill, offers a spectacular view of the valley and the sea. Built around 450 BC, it is known for its impressive size and the traces of an ancient fire visible on its walls. The Temple of Zeus, one of the largest Doric temples ever built, was erected to celebrate the victory of the Agrigentines over the Carthaginians in the Battle of Himera. Although today only the foundations and some remains of the columns are left, its grandeur is still perceptible.Finally, the Agora area, the beating heart of public life in ancient Akragas, where commercial, political, and social activities took place.
