Trapani, Erice and Segesta
Set off to discover Trapani, a fascinating city located on the northwestern coast of Sicily.
We begin with a brief stop at the natural reserve of the Salt Pans of Trapani and Paceco, where we can observe the characteristic windmills used to transfer water from one basin to another and to grind salt, an ancient tradition dating back to the Phoenicians. This place is also an important habitat for numerous species of migratory birds, including pink flamingos. We continue with a visit to the city to admire the splendid Baroque palaces and churches, such as the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Church of the Jesuit College. Strolling through the historic center, we will reach Piazza Mercato del Pesce, once the bustling heart of the fish trade, where we can immerse ourselves in the lively and authentic atmosphere of Trapani.
Stop for lunch in the beautiful Erice, an enchanting medieval village perched on the top of the mountain of the same name. With its elegantly paved streets and ancient walls, Erice offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Trapani and the Egadi Islands. Here, we can enjoy the local cuisine in one of the typical restaurants, savoring traditional dishes such as fish couscous.
Finally, we reach Segesta to admire its magnificent Greek temple in Doric style, one of the best-preserved in the world. This temple, built in the 5th century BC, stands isolated in the midst of wild hills, offering a suggestive panorama and an atmosphere of peace and serenity.
